Interactive WhiteBoard
The interactive whiteboard replaces traditional
classroom whiteboard, in an electronic form. Interactive whiteboard has the
same white, glossy surface and allows you to utilized electronic erasable
markers or the touch of your hand to write or play. Interactive whiteboards are
connected to computer and digital projector. Teachers can create and display
lessons through a digital projector onto the whiteboard right from their
computers. Prometheus Promethean ActivBoard and SMART Technology’s SMART Board
are the two most widely used interactive whiteboards in the classroom. Each
brand of interactive whiteboard includes its own interactive whiteboard
activity software. Promethean ActivBoard programs are called ActivStudio and
ActivInspire. Teachers can pre-build fun and interactive lessons within any
content area engaging students through the ActivInspire program. During a
teacher led presentation on an interactive whiteboard, students can come up to
the board and illustrate their understandings by manipulating the objects on
the whiteboard. Students can practice learned skills by moving text or objects
around on the interactive whiteboard during a lesson in a game or drill format.
In my future classroom, I will use an interactive whiteboard to enrich my
lessons with student involvement. Students will be able to problem solve and
self-check their progress throughout all lessons.
Interactive whiteboards are available in many classrooms. Teachers do not have to worry about using an eraser or writing everything on the board which takes up classroom time. Interactive whiteboard provides the option to reset the page with a push of the button. Interactive projectors play a role in displaying lessons onto the interactive whiteboard. The interactive projectors provide a clear way to display text and various interactive activities for student’s learning enjoyment. It is important to have a good balance between teacher and student led instruction when utilizing activities on the interactive whiteboard. The students need to be instructed on what to do and then practice the instruction on their own through the interactive whiteboard software. Another issue that may prevail is the lack of electricity or web-based resources. Overcome these issues by creating alternative non web-based material or utilize a backup battery.

ActivInspire
is a Promethean ActivBoard’s software. The program allows teachers to create
various interactive activities within their lesson. The lesson can include up
to ten or more pages that can be flipped through on the interactive whiteboard.
I created a flipchart lesson based on the Christopher Columbus: The Exploration
of North America through ActivInspire. The flipchart focuses on a 4th
grade social studies standard. The lesson is inclusive of all subject areas
such as math, English, social studies and science. Students can interact with
the lesson through the use of ActivInspire features such as Magic Ink, Magic Revealer,
drag-a-copy, the pen and eraser. I invite you to take a look at my interactive

I have attached my flipchart as both a native ActivInspire file (.flipchart) and a .pdf. If you have ActivInspire, you can open my flipchart. If you do not have ActivInspire, you can download a free 30-day trial or view the .pdf version. The .pdf version will give you an idea of what I created, but you will not be able to see the notes or experience the full interactive quality of the flipchart.
