Online Learning
Online projects, collaboration sites, and online student
publishing opportunities are new ways to incorporate technology into the
classroom. Online projects are learning adventures where students learn standard-related
content online. The students use technology to engage in contact outside of the
classroom with their peers or mentors. Online resources are used to enhance in
the collection process and the creation of original products by the student.
Finally, the student publishes their original work online to an audience that
will use or care about the results. Journey
North is an example of an elementary online project. Students act like
scientist follow the migration of animals along with seasonal changes. They add
their collected data to an online central database that is shared worldwide
with scientist and peers. Utilizing online projects inside the classroom
promotes higher order thinking skills. Students have a chance to collaborate
with experts outside of the classroom promoting the highest LoTi level 6.
Collaboration sites are a great way to engage students in online collaboration with
mentors or peers. Dr. Math is a
collaboration site where students can ask math questions to an expert. The website
allows the students to search archives of questions with responses from Dr.
Math himself. Student publishing opportunities are an awesome way to support
student creativity. Students publish their original work online with others
that care or will use the results. Kidpub
is an example of a student publishing opportunity website. Students have the opportunity
to share and chat about their writings with other students. Kidpub runs
competitions and gives out awards or prizes for the best writing submissions.
A few concerns with utilizing online projects, collaboration sites, or student publishing opportunity sites evolve around internet safety. Teachers should be using creditable sites and monitor all communications that are taking place between a student, mentor or peer. It is extremely important to protect the identity of our students. Therefor the name, picture and location of the students should never be disclosed online. Instead use fun avatars and first name or nickname only when posting student work. A lesson on internet safety and netiquette is appropriate before proceeding with online projects in the classroom.

Journey North is an awesome online project that students can participate in. Students will follow animal migration patterns along with seasonal changes. They will publish their findings into an online data base. An expert scientist will communicate with the students to elaborate on the migration patterns in relation to the seasonal changes. This is a great activity to engage student creativity.
